June President’s Message
Please put on your calendar our fifth GTRCC meeting of 2009 for all
members. It will be on Tuesday, June 2nd, @ 6:30 PM.
We’ll be meeting at Tampico Bay University Side restaurant at 1515 College Street
in Columbus (#662-327-2123). Our club
member meetings are always on the first Tuesday evening of each month at 6:30 PM.
Come and attend because your ideas and support are vital to the club. At the meeting, we’ll be discussing details
concerning the annual club picnic on Saturday, July 11th at Ralph
& Carole Stewart’s home (605 Allison Hardy Road, Columbus, MS, #327-3552). We’ll eat at 6:30
PM, but come as early as 4:00 PM
for fellowship and activities. The club
will provide the main dish and members are asked to bring side dishes or
dessert. Side dish sign ups will be
posted on the club website along with directions to the Stewart’s house. Contact Tallulah Bryant (tkokb2@aol.com) to get your side dish posted.
Despite threatening weather, the Gum Tree 10K was held on
Saturday, May 9. Lightening delayed the
start, but it cleared off for most of the race.
Some of us were pummeled with heavy rain before we finished, but it
cleared off again for the awards ceremony.
Congratulations to all the GTRCC
runners who participated. I had the
privilege of competing in the Senior Olympics on May 15 and 16. Tom Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy, and OK &
Tallulah Bryant also competed in various Senior Olympic events that same week. It really is a special program, with camaraderie
and support among the athletes and race officials. Try it sometime-you’ll like it. Congratulations are further extended to OK
& Tallulah Bryant, Lisa Landrum, & Frank Golden for their participation
in the 2-day bike ride on May 16 & 17.
Make sure you mark your calendar for the next two Grand
Prix races. They are the Running with
the King 5K (Veterans Memorial
Park in Tupelo)
on Saturday, June 6th, at 8:00 AM
and the Lake Lowndes State Park Duathlon (Lake
Lowndes State Park
in Columbus) on Saturday, August 15th
at 8:00 AM. Members should also notify Don about outside
participation points as soon as an event is completed, so that those points can
be included in the Grand Prix competition.
Be sure to let me know if you would like some 2009 club
brochures/flyers for distribution. Train
hard, keep that competitive spirit, and enjoy that runner’s high in every race.
I’ll be seeing you on the Roads,
Dave
